Domain lock and auth code

The domain lock stops your domain from being transferred without your permission. It is on by default, and with an extra lock code even changes from your own account require the code.

Included with your domains at Sitewig at no extra costSee domains

What you get

  • Locked by default

While the lock is on, nobody can get the auth code and transfer the domain to another provider. For endings such as .com and .eu we also set the lock at the registry.

  • Extra lock code

A lock code is an extra password for the domain. Once set, it is needed to unlock and get the auth code, even if someone is logged in to your account.

  • Get the auth code yourself

To transfer the domain, unlock it and get the auth code in the control panel. Changed your mind? Lock it again straight away.

How to get started

  1. Open Domain lock

Choose the domain under Domains in the control panel and open Domain lock. It shows whether the transfer lock is on.

  2. Set a lock code

Enter a new lock code and keep it somewhere safe, such as a password manager. Repeated wrong attempts block changes for a while.

  3. Transfer out when you want

Unlock, and get the auth code under Auth code. Give the code to your new provider.

Good to know

.dk and domains elsewhere

.dk domains have no lock at the registry. A .dk transfer happens at Punktum dk with the owner's approval, so the lock at Sitewig only stops the auth code from being fetched here. If the domain is registered with another provider, you manage its lock there.

Questions and answers

Does the lock affect my website or email?

No. The lock only stops transfers. DNS, website and email work as normal.

Do I need to unlock to transfer a domain to Sitewig?

Yes, but at the provider the domain is coming from. The lock at Sitewig only applies to domains already registered with us.

I forgot my lock code. What now?

Contact support and we will help you.

How do I protect my account best?

Turn on two-step login. Then someone who knows your password cannot log in and change your domains.
