What you get

  • A copy with its own address

Sitewig copies all files and the database to a new website on staging.yourdomain and creates the DNS record for you. Your real website is not touched.

  • Test without risk

Log in to WordPress on the copy with your normal login and try a new theme, big updates or a new plugin. The copy is set to stay out of search engines.

  • Push live when you are ready

Happy with it? Replace your real website with the copy in one click. The cache on the real website is cleared automatically afterwards.

How to get started

  1. Open WordPress staging

Find WordPress staging in the control panel and choose the WordPress website you want to test on.

  2. Create the copy

Press Create. A typical site is ready within minutes, and the status is shown in the list meanwhile.

  3. Test and push live

Work on the copy and press Push staging live when everything works. Take a backup just before, so you can always go back.

Good to know

What pushing live overwrites

Push staging live replaces both files and database on your real website. Orders, comments and form replies that arrived after the copy was made will therefore be lost. There is one staging site per website, and the website must use a domain from your Sitewig account. Need a fresh copy? Support will help.

Questions and answers

Does staging cost extra?

No. It is included in every paid hosting plan. The copy uses space on your web hosting, and its database counts towards your databases.

Can visitors see the test copy?

Only if they know the address. The copy is set not to be indexed by search engines.

Is my email affected when I push live?

No. Only the WordPress website's files and database are replaced. Email, DNS and your other websites are not touched.

Does it work with websites from the website builder?

No, staging is for WordPress. The website builder has its own version history, where you can go back to an earlier version.
