Free domain lookup
WHOIS lookup
See whether a domain is available – or who manages it, when it expires and which name servers it uses. The data comes straight from the registry.
Owner and contact details are not shown. Under the GDPR, registries hide information about individuals, and we only show the technical data the registry itself publishes.
About WHOIS lookups
What is WHOIS?
WHOIS and the newer RDAP are the registries’ public lookups. They show whether a domain is registered, with which registrar and when it expires.
Privacy first
We do not store your lookups and never show the owner’s name, address, email or phone number – only the registry’s technical data.
.dk at Punktum dk
Lookups for .dk go directly to Punktum dk’s WHOIS server, whois.punktum.dk. Punktum dk is the registry for every .dk domain.
Statuses that block a transfer
If a lookup shows one of these statuses, the domain cannot be transferred right now. Here is what they mean and who can fix them.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
client transfer prohibitedclientTransferProhibited | The current registrar has locked the domain against transfers. The owner can usually unlock it in the current provider’s control panel. |
server transfer prohibitedserverTransferProhibited | The registry has locked the domain. Only the current provider can help get the lock removed. |
redemption periodredemptionPeriod | The domain has expired and is in the redemption period. It must be restored at the current provider before it can be transferred. |
pending deletependingDelete | The domain is waiting to be deleted by the registry and cannot be transferred. |
pending transferpendingTransfer | A transfer of the domain is already in progress. |
Under ICANN’s rules, generic extensions (gTLDs) such as .com, .net and .org cannot be transferred for 60 days after registration or the last transfer. Country-code domains such as .dk, .eu and .se do not have this rule.
.dk domains at Punktum dk
- Punktum dk is the registry for .dk. The registrant enters into an agreement directly with Punktum dk, and registration and renewal run for 1 year at a time.
- A new .dk domain requires Punktum dk’s ID check (MitID or other ID). We work with a cautious deadline of 25 days. If the check is not completed in time, the domain is suspended and deleted.
- Since 1 July 2026, all new .dk registrations are registrar-managed. Older .dk domains are often self-managed, and the registrant then changes name servers and contact details in Punktum dk’s self-service.
- Disputes about .dk domain names are decided by the Danish Complaints Board for Domain Names (Klagenævnet for Domænenavne).

Where the data comes from
We first ask the registry’s RDAP service, which we find through IANA’s bootstrap file. Extensions without RDAP there are looked up directly on the registry’s WHOIS server (port 43):
| Extension | WHOIS server |
|---|---|
| .dk | whois.punktum.dk |
| .se | whois.iis.se |
| .nu | whois.iis.nu |
| .eu | whois.eu |
| .de | whois.denic.de |
| .io | whois.nic.io |
| .me | whois.nic.me |
| .co | whois.registry.co |
Questions about WHOIS
Why can’t I see who owns the domain?
Under the GDPR, registries do not publish information about individuals. To contact the owner, use the registrar’s contact form or – for .dk – Punktum dk.
Does “available” mean I can definitely get the domain?
Almost always. Some names are reserved or premium at the registry. We check again when you order, and you never pay for a domain we cannot register.
The domain expires soon – can I take it over?
The owner usually has a period after expiry to renew. Only when the registry has deleted the domain does it become available to everyone.
How many lookups can I make?
Up to 10 lookups per minute. The limit protects the registries against bulk lookups.
